In Which I Answer 20 More Liebster Award Questions

I just want to thank everyone for hanging with me during my week of super self-absorbed, me-centric posts. I know that you don’t have to read or comment on every post on every blog you follow — that would obviously be insane — and I never expected people to comment on my personal nonsense. So thank you.

Yesterday I posted answers to 22 questions that had been posed at me, a four-time recipient of the Liebster Award, a blogger networking and recognition type thingy. My first two nominations had 11 questions for me, while my second two had 10 questions each, which I will answer … now.

Questions from Kellie at Will Run for Ears:

  1. When/why did you start running? I’ve kinda answered this a few times before, including kind of in my answers yesterday, so I’ll keep this short in the spirit of not being totally redundant: I started running about two to two and a half years ago. I was drawn to it because it was way more calorie-burning than the gym activities I’d been doing, but I was also trying to get away from the gym because of the disordered eating and binge exercising that was somehow taking over my life. I had always hated running as a kid — I was the slowest and my lungs always felt like they were going to explode and it just felt unnatural to me. Even though my binge gym-going was hurting me, my cardio levels were excellent, and it felt way easier than it ever had. And I realized I really loved it, and I wanted to get better at it.
  2. What accomplishment are you most proud of? This is hard. Not because I think I’m overly humble, but I do always feel kind of competitive, and when I do accomplish something, I always think that it’s something other people have done, and probably a lot better than me. I guess I’m proud of the fact that I moved to NYC and that I’m living fairly comfortably with a job in the field I’ve always wanted to be in. Also, nothing really beats the feeling of finishing a marathon.
  3.  If you could pick anyone (famous or otherwise) to be your race day pacer, who would it be? Why? I’m not sure she could even go as slow as I do, but I recently met Lauren Fleshman at the Oakley Mini 10K and I would love if she were able to pace me! She was so sweet and while I don’t follow a lot of professional runners, I always like reading Lauren’s blog and her articles for Runner’s World. She seems so down-to-earth and fun.

  4. Disneyland or Walt Disney World? Hahahaha, I feel like this is one of those things on Disney blogs that is ridiculously contentious, and I think that there is this implicit thing where if you’re a “true Disney fan blogger” you have to say that Disneyland is the best but that EPCOT makes WDW worth going to along with the fact that it’s generally cheaper to go to Florida and have an “all-inclusive” type of vacation with the Magical Express and the resorts and the transportation. But I think that for a lot of people, it’s whichever park you grew up with, and for me that’s WDW.
  5. What would your theme song be? Hahaha. “Let It Go,” probably. I’M SO PREDICTABLE.
  6. What is your favorite movie? “FROZEN.” I mean obviously I love that movie so much, but I swear I watch non-Disney movies too. Only now I can’t think of any. I’m more of an obsessive television watcher, really.
  7. What is your favorite motivational quotation or mantra? I try to keep “PMA” in mind for “positive mental attitude,” but, like, during a race, it’s usually more like “five miles to go … five miles to go … four miles to go … four miles to go …”

  8. If you could be anything, what would you be? Queen Elsa of Arendelle. Did you mean nonfiction? I’d like to be my cat, maybe. She has a pretty good life. If I had to be a person? I guess I’d be a book writer that makes enough money to live off of book-writing and live in a house with a cat for each room. Yeah, I’m that person.

  9. Why did you start blogging? I mean, that kind of relates to question one … I wanted to keep myself accountable for “living a healthy lifestyle” and kinda maybe become a runDisney resource, I guess, but it kinda turned into something else that I think is better.
  10. What is your favorite thing about Disney? Hahahaha. Everything? Is that not an acceptable answer? OK, this sounds cheesy as hell, so sorry, but I love that it it’s all about bringing people together over creating impossible, fantastic things and making lifetime memories. I know that sounds like a dumb tagline. But there you go.

Questions from Jenn and Moon of Fairest Run of All:

  1. When your energy is flagging and you need a boost, what song do you play? I have a long that’s been on my running playlist since, like, the very first day I ran, for this very reason. It’s “Party Hard” by Andrew W.K. It has a really great cadence that helps me pick up and keep a steady pace when I know I’m slowing down and my form is becoming sloppy.
  2. What’s the worst piece of running equipment you’ve ever made the mistake of using? I mean, a lot of running equipment is trial and error. What works for a lot of people doesn’t work for everyone, and a lot of times I’m perfectly happy with things until I notice a better-crafted replacement at a running store, and then I get that and I’m not sure how I ever lived without it. Anyway, here are some things I’ve used that I ended up hating (though I know a lot of people use these things and love them): the FlipBelt, “hydration belts” or waist packs with water bottles attached, and running shoes that I didn’t get properly fitted at a running store.
  3. What’s your favorite way to fuel before, during, and/or after a run? I’ve recently come around to Gu. I had tried flavors like vanilla and mocha and lemon-lime both in the Gu and Clif Shots brands, but I HATED the texture and the flavors. I was into Clif Shot Bloks for awhile, but I find the packaging annoying and storing them during a run is hard … they liquify in warm weather, especially if they’re tucked into a pocket next to your skin. I’ve tried those JellyBelly Sports Beans, but they were meh. So I went back to one of the first things I did, which my boyfriend always used as fuel: Haribo Gold Bears. Yeah, they don’t have the caffeine and whatever vitamins and supplements they put in Shot Bloks, but they don’t get all melty and gooey as easily and I find them easier to eat. Still, it kinda takes some time to eat them. They’re still my go-to during marathons, but I wanted to stop less during half marathons, so I decided to experiment with Gu flavors again — and that’s when I discovered the salted caramel. It was like I could hear the angels singing. It’s amazing. So anyway, yeah. I eat Salted Caramel Gu and sometimes Haribo during races, and sometimes I will have Haribo or a Gu before a race or run as well. I also eat Haribo after a run or race, sometimes an entire bag. I FUCKING LOVE HARIBO. For before/after a run or race, I like Kind or Strong & Kind bars, bananas, apples, Greek yogurt, plain or flavored almond butter (usually not on anything, I love those Justin’s single-serve packets); or bagels or toast with butter.
  4. Assuming practicality is no object, what’s your dream race costume? Probably Elsa’s sparkly gown, and a ridiculous wig. HOW DO PEOPLE RUN IN WIGS. WHAT IS THE SECRET
  5. What race should runDisney add to their schedule? I was always holding out hope for a “Star Wars” race or a Disneyland Paris race, but now the “Star Wars” one is actually real (and sadly I’m not doing the inaugural run because it’s the week after Dopey) and it looks like the Disneyland Paris one is ALMOST REAL. So … wow. So how about an Aulani Half Marathon with Lapu Lapus and shave ices at the end? MAKE IT HAPPEN, RUNDISNEY.
  6. Which Disney park is your favorite? NO. I WILL NOT ANSWER THIS. YOU CAN’T MAKE ME PICK.
  7. How do you like to reward yourself post-race? A glass of Champagne and an entire bag of Haribo. (I’m 100 percent serious.) I wouldn’t say no to a nice steak dinner, though.

  8. If you became a Disney princess, what would you be like? Elsa-like, I hope. After I learned to control my powers, of course. I hope people are ready for a princess who’s prone to bouts of sarcasm, anxiety and depression, though. GET READY.

  9. What is THE BEST food? ANOTHER QUESTION I REFUSE TO ANSWER. But yesterday I made a list of my favorite foods and also threw together a “perfect Disney meal,” so you can refer to that!
  10. Once and for all: who makes the best running shorts? I’m really into Lululemon’s Dart & Dash Shorts at the moment. (I’m wearing them in the photo with Lauren Fleshman above.) They’re tight and a bit compressive, they’re not too long but not too short, and, best of all, THEY HAVE LIKE A MILLION POCKETS, including a sweat- and water-resistant pocket in the back for phones or other stuff that you don’t want to get all gross. I bought two pairs. They’re not cheap, but they’re worth it, at least to me.
